About Transition Caradon

Transition Caradon is an umbrella group which will be promoting Transition Town initiatives around Caradon district. It is hoped that these will gather momentum in their local communities and become full Transition groups in their own right.

Transition Liskeard is now starting as a formal TT group, in Saltash the Environmental Action group are covering similar ground and considering going for TT status, Looe, Callington and Torpoint are still at early stages.

Transition North Cornwall presents

ENERGY BEYOND OIL

A talk and presentation by author and energy expert Paul Mobbs

7.00 - 9.00pm
Tuesday 28 October 2008
The Town Hall, Launceston, Cornwall, PL15 7AR

£3.00 voluntary donation

This talk will explain the causes and consequences of the urgent energy crisis we are all facing now and in the coming years and to answers to questions such as:

Why is fuel, energy and food so expensive?
How much energy will have available in the future?
How will we heat our houses and how will we travel?
When will it all happen and how will it affect you & me?
What can we do about it, individually and as local communities?

Paul Mobbs is an independent consultant, excellent and entertaining speaker, researcher and writer on energy, environment and low impact technology. 'Energy Beyond Oil' is a very good guide to the issues of energy consumption in the UK, climate change, peak oil and resource depletion, based on Paul's book of the same name. Paul will outline the scale and complexity of the problems we face, globally as well as within our local communities, as the human species reaches the limits of the Earth's environmental capacity. He will also outline some of the possible actions that you can take to protect yourself and your family from the approaching crisis.

There will be time for discussion/ questions and answer session.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity. It may change your life!

In the very lively event, people came forward to propose areas of discussion, which included energy, food, transport, Heart and Soul and more. The full schedule will be posted here. Transition is all about people themselves starting the move within their community to achieve more sustainable living.  Because it's a bottom-up initiative, it means we don't have the resources to advertise what we're doing widely in the media.  In any case, that isn't perhaps the best way for us to tell others about what we're trying to achieve.  Since it's people at the grass roots stimulating change, then the best way for us to encourage others to join us is by word of mouth, or even word of email!

Organic Farm walk PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday 21st June several members of Transition Caradon and Liskeard braved the wet misty weather to visit Trerieve Organic Farm to hear first hand from Jim Candy about how he is reacting to increasing energy costs and the effects of climate change.“Higher diesel prices are causing problems on organic farms, as a lot of weed control relies on frequent cultivations, either to create stale seedbeds or inter-row weeding, or topping weeds on grassland. However the depletion of fossil fuels is having a bigger impact on conventional farmers, who are seeing huge increases in the cost of artificial fertilizers and sprays. I believe agriculture will have to become less reliant on chemical inputs, and people will have to use local produce if we are going to conserve oil stocks for essential priorities,” he said.

Klaudia van Gool, who helps organise Transition Caradon meetings, said “ It was great to see how Jim collects rainwater to provide drinking water for the cattle, saving the energy embedded in mains supplies, and manages his farm yard manure by composting to enable maximum uptake of the nutrients for his crops. This visit gave us the chance to look at how agriculture must adapt in future, but more importantly allowed us to look at practical answers to these challenging problems.”

The event was covered by the Western Morning News. Our press release (above), which was taken up by the Cornish Guardian this week.

At the 9th May meeting of Transition Caradon, a fascinating event about money, with the film Money as debt, we called for a more local Transition project, to enable us to start focussing in on practical projects. So a new steering group was formed which met a the end of June.

The first event as Transition Liskeard was held at the Town Halls' Long Room, where we showed How to Save the World, a film about biodynamic farming and had a chat about what is happening locally.  To add to the food theme, we are also holding a farm walk at Trerieve Farm Saturday 21st June at 6 p.m. You can find a poster for it here.
